Face Mask Hygiene

Protection a face mask and respirator offers

Earloop Face mask

Face masks are routine in some countries and are used quite frequently in public to protect against pollution, help lower the risk of contracting a virus through the “splash from a sneeze or a cough” and to provide some protection against hand-to-mouth transmissions.

Of course, the mask must be worn correctly and changed frequently. Surgical face masks are not used to block airborne particles, only respiratory droplets.

People can wear surgical masks if they are sick with the cold or the flu and do not wish to get other people sick, but it is suggested to not go to public areas as it would be the best time to stay home and rest.

N95 Respirator

N95 respirators offer far superior protection against air pathogens and hazardous substances as such devices prevent 95 per cent of small particles from entering the nose and mouth area but work if worn correctly. An N95 mask protects people from breathing in small particles in the air such as dust, air pathogens and mould. They are not effective at particles that are smaller than 0.3 microns, but if someone is working in the medical profession or possible epidemic situation they should consider the use of a cleanable face shield which is preferred by most medical professionals or a surgical mask over an N95 respirator and other steps to reduce surface contamination.

It is important to clean hands with soap and water or an alcohol-based hand sanitizer before and after touching or adjusting the respirator (if necessary, for comfort or to maintain fit).

When to discard:

It is standard practice to dispose of N95 masks and replace every day.

  • Discard N95 respirators following use during aerosol-generating procedures.
  • Discard N95 respirators contaminated with blood, respiratory or nasal secretions, or other bodily fluids from patients.
  • Discard N95 respirators following close contact with or exiting from the care area of any patient co-infected with an infectious disease requiring contact precautions.
  • Discard N95 respirators that are damaged or become hard to breathe through.
